Deep, hollow sounds of the organ climbed the stairs toward the woman in white. Her dress hung on the door, undergarments strewn about the room. The veil perched upon her head like a crown of royalty covered her loosely curled hair.

“Have you decided?” His low voice carried across the room from where he stood.  His tuxedo gave him a James Bond appearance as he leaned against the wall with his arms folded over his chest.

“It’s our special day.” She spoke into her hands, keeping her face hidden.

“We had another special day last summer. Do you remember that one?” His tone didn’t change.  She touched the silver necklace hanging around her neck. A locket, exchanged with different vows. Vows of obedience, love and submission.

“Can’t we wait until after the party?” She turned to look at him, hope springing to her eyes. He shook his head.

“I don’t think we should exchange these vows today with this hanging over us.” He was right. She knew it. “When you are ready, take position.” He flattened his back against the wall.

She resolved herself to his decision and stood from the bed. She chose a large space between the desk and vanity. Her hands pressed against the wall, feet spread shoulder length apart. She presented her bottom with an arch of her back.  She felt him reach her.

“Samantha, why is the door locked?” A jangle of the doorknob.  Samantha’s eyes pleaded with him. He shook his head.

“Not now, Mom. I’ll be down in a minute.” She kept her stare on him. Her mother’s footsteps faded. Samantha faced the wall, breathing heavy.   The buckle jingled, the leather slipped through loops. She braced herself.
